How to Know When Your AC Needs to be Replaced

Autumn is coming soon and your air conditioner has survived another season of heat. But just because it made it through this summer doesn’t mean it will keep the cold air coming the next time temperatures rise. Here are common indicators that your AC may be on its way out.

Not keeping your cool

Your air conditioner is supposed to keep you cool and comfortable on the hottest days, so if your system is not keeping your home cool (and you’re not comfortable) there’s probably a problem. There are several situations where your system might stop cooling – a wrongly calibrated thermostat, a refrigerant leak, or compressor failure. Depending on the situation, it may be ideal to just let go of your little engine that could, and move on to a newer, more energy-efficient air conditioning system – ideally one that keeps you cool.

More Frequent Repairs

If you’re requiring air conditioner repairs every year, it may be time to give it up and purchase a new one. Frequent AC repairs are a good signal that your AC is starting to die and you don’t want to be caught in the middle of summer with a sweltering hot home.

Increase in Energy Bills

If you see a rise in your AC bills that could be a sign that something is wrong. If your air conditioner is working extreme overtime, it could result in you working overtime to afford it, and it could be a better choice for you to purchase a more energy-efficient AC that can easily reduce your peak season cooling payments.

Drop in Air Flow

If your air isn’t flowing as strong as it used to be, it could be a sign that your air conditioning system is on its way out. Check your home’s air filters to be sure they do not require replacing and, if not, call a technician to help find the problem.

Constantly Starting Up

If your system is continuously running, more importantly if it’s not supplying much cool air, then you probably have a problem. It could be an issue that’s easy to rectify with a routine maintenance, but it could also be an indicator that your system has to work more to keep you cool and comfy and that results in wasted energy and wasted money.

Weird Noise

If your AC starts making weird noises, there might be a problem. Higher pitched noises might mean a problem with one of the motors. Rattling noises may signal a part got loose. Don’t take any chances. Call an HVAC technician to take a look and decide if it’s an issue worth repairing or if it will continue to be an ongoing issue.

Signs of Aging

As it is with everything (and everyone), the more something has aged, the weaker it eventually gets. Is your system not cooling as efficiently as it did five years ago? Are some rooms warmer or cooler than others? Is it taking a larger amount of time to cool your home? All of these are common signals of an aging air conditioner.
