Adil Karamally Receives Joe Groh Foundation Grant

July 09, 2016

The Joseph Groh Foundation is an incredible organization that gives financial support to men and women in the construction industry who endured life-altering injuries. Each year the Foundation honors numerous recipients with a grant and earlier in the year the Joseph Groh Foundation was excited to introduce Adil Karamally as a recipient.

Adil, born in Pakistan, received his MBA from the University of Chicago and afterwards bought ProStar Mechanical Services of Anaheim, CA and received his HVAC and general contracting license. In 2013, Adil experienced a massive stroke at the young age of 48. He lost the function of his left arm and it left his left leg seriously impaired, leaving Adil with foot drop. Because he could only walk while using a heavy brace, his muscles began to atrophy and his doctors feared that he would most likely become confined to a wheelchair.

Unable to work, Adil’s wife, Laila, was their only source of income, causing financial pressure on the couple with a young child in elementary and three more children in college. Their spirits were lifted when Adil was a good candidate for the WalkAid System, an apparatus that uses functional electrical stimulation to help someone with Adil’s condition walk again. But when they learned of the cost, Adil and Laila realized they would not be able to afford the equipment in addition to the extensive rehab that would be needed so he could understand how to use it.

Thankfully, a professional at WalkAid referred Adil and Laila to the Joseph Groh Foundation and, thanks to the generous grant, Adil got the WalkAid System and has been overjoyed at the success. His muscle is no longer showing signs of atrophy and is actually beginning to regenerate, bringing optimism back to Adil and Laila.
